“Martha, Martha,†the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.â€
Luke 10:41,42
In Luke 10:38-42 Jesus and their disciples arrive at Martha’s house. Martha busies herself with taking care of the guest, while Mary in contrast spent her time simply listening to what Jesus said. Martha then came to ask Jesus to ask Mary to help her. And Jesus replied as above.
This passage is not talking about worrying about what we have to do. Neither is this passage about whether we prioritse christian activies first, or whether we prioritise so called secular activities first.
This passage is simply about spending time with God. Are we so caught up with different activities, that we no longer spend that time by Jesus’ feet? Or maybe spending time with God becomes just another activity, where we allocate 5 min to every activity that we have to do. Or worse still. We’re so tired with all that we have to do, that we go to Jesus’ side, just to fall asleep there
One of my sec 4 student gave me the following description about how his day can go by:
CCA can end at 7-8pm. Then rush down to church. Then reach home… probably about 10 plus liddat lor
And he’s only in sec 4. One can only imagine his schedule when he gets into JC. But the point is, does Christian activity become part of the list of “things we have to do”. Christians mah. Must serve God lor!
Sevice should come as an outflow of our personal relationship with God. If our own walk with God is in trouble, our service for God would never be easy either. God is the very one who sustains us. My pastor told of how at a leader’s meeting (cell group leaders and above lah) He took a poll of who did QT at least 4 times a week. Only a few hands came up. “who did QT everyday?” Most hands went down. “No wonder there are many of you having problems with your ministry!”
So just a reminder, that in the midst of your business, no matter what u’re busy with. Be it School Stuff, or Church stuff. Do remember about the importance of your walk with God. Spend the time with him, and listen to what he has to whisper to you.
