Psalms 46:1-2

God is our refuge and strength, a very present(well proved) help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, Psalms 46:1-2

This psalm encourages to hope and trust in God; in his power and providence, and his gracious presence with his church in the worst of times. The ESV translates adds a subnote of “well proved”, and the word implies the idea of “found to be so”. God is our ever present help and we cannot desire a better help, nor will we find any better.

What idea comes to your mind when you come across the word refuge? Dictionary.com defines it as

A source of help, relief, or comfort in times of trouble

The key that I would draw from verse 1 would be our dependence on God, how much we trust in God everytime we are troubled.

If God be for us, who can be against us; to do us any harm? Observe how threatening the imagery conveyed in verse 2 is. It’s a natural calamity that we would otherwise not possibly be able to escape from. Yet if God is all sufficient for us, what do we have to fear?
