Basics revisited Study 3</p>
<p>Prayer is:</p>
<ul>
<li>a privilege</li>
<li>using this privilege as God’s children</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>In the past, God’s name was so holy that the Jews cannot even mention the word “God”. Yet because of Jesus Christ, we now have a intimate relationship with God, and we’re all God’s children now.</li>
</ul>
<p><span id="more-60"></span></p>
<p>In prayer, we <strong>love</strong> Him, <strong>trust</strong> Him and <strong>speak</strong> to Him.</p>
<p>The Lord’s Prayer <em>Matt 6:9-13</em></p>
<ul>
<li>To who?<br />
Our father who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name</li>
<li>Purpose<br />
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven</li>
<li>What do we ask for?<br />
Give us this day our daily bread</li>
<li>Ask for pardon<br />
And forgive us our debts as we have forgiven our debtors</li>
<li>Ask for protection<br />
And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil</li>
<li>Praises<br />
For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.</li>
<li>Recognition of God’s </li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Character ïƒ “Hallowed be thy name”</li>
<li>Sovereignty ïƒ  “Thy Kingdom”</li>
</ul>
<li>Humble acceptance of our position as dependent creations in his creation ïƒ <em>“Give us this day our daily bread”</em></li>
<li>Humble acceptance of our position as redeemed people ïƒ <em>“forgive us our debts”</em></li>
<p>Demands of our prayer</p>
<ul>
<li>Pray without ceasing <em><a href="http://www.gnpcb.org/esv/search/?q=1+Thess+5%3A17" onMouseOver="addvs('13', '', verse13); stm(Text[13],Style[0])" onMouseOut="htm()">1 Thess 5:17</a></em></li>
<li>Pray at all times <em><a href="http://www.gnpcb.org/esv/search/?q=+Luke+18%3A1" onMouseOver="addvs('14', '', verse14); stm(Text[14],Style[0])" onMouseOut="htm()">Luke 18:1</a></em></li>
<li>Pray in everything <em><a href="http://www.gnpcb.org/esv/search/?q=+Philippians+4%3A6" onMouseOver="addvs('15', '', verse15); stm(Text[15],Style[0])" onMouseOut="htm()">Philippians 4:6</a></em></li>
<li>Continue steadfastly <em><a href="http://www.gnpcb.org/esv/search/?q=+Col+4%3A2" onMouseOver="addvs('16', '', verse16); stm(Text[16],Style[0])" onMouseOut="htm()">Col 4:2</a></em></li>
<li>Pray in Jesus’ Name <em><a href="http://www.gnpcb.org/esv/search/?q=+John+16%3A24" onMouseOver="addvs('17', '', verse17); stm(Text[17],Style[0])" onMouseOut="htm()">John 16:24</a></em></li>
<li>Pray according to God’s will <em><a href="http://www.gnpcb.org/esv/search/?q=1+John+5%3A14%2C15" onMouseOver="addvs('18', '', verse18); stm(Text[18],Style[0])" onMouseOut="htm()">1 John 5:14,15</a></em></li>
<li>Pray in faith <em><a href="http://www.gnpcb.org/esv/search/?q=+Matthew+21%3A22" onMouseOver="addvs('19', '', verse19); stm(Text[19],Style[0])" onMouseOut="htm()">Matthew 21:22</a></em></li>
<li>Pray with repentance <em><a href="http://www.gnpcb.org/esv/search/?q=+Psalm+66%3A18" onMouseOver="addvs('20', '', verse20); stm(Text[20],Style[0])" onMouseOut="htm()">Psalm 66:18</a></em></li>
<li>Pray with right motives <a href="http://www.gnpcb.org/esv/search/?q=+James+4%3A3" onMouseOver="addvs('21', '', verse21); stm(Text[21],Style[0])" onMouseOut="htm()">James 4:3</a></li>
</ul>
<p>Asking in Christ’s name</p>
<ul>
<li>Request that which is true to God’s character</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>A privilege</li>
<li>A responsibility</li>
</ul>
<li>Analogy: A secretary writing a letter in the boss’ name.</li>
<li>Written by the secretary, but must be what the boss wants to write about.</li>
<p>Prayer helps to</p>
<ul>
<li>Keep our life on track <em><a href="http://www.gnpcb.org/esv/search/?q=+Luke+21%3A34-36" onMouseOver="addvs('22', '', verse22); stm(Text[22],Style[0])" onMouseOut="htm()">Luke 21:34-36</a></em></li>
<li>Maintain moral standards <em>Matt 26:4</em></li>
<li>Avoid discouragement <em><a href="http://www.gnpcb.org/esv/search/?q=+Luke+18%3A1" onMouseOver="addvs('23', '', verse23); stm(Text[23],Style[0])" onMouseOut="htm()">Luke 18:1</a></em></li>
</ul>
<p>Answers to prayers</p>
<ul>
<li>Answers to prayers do not depend on our obedience. </li>
<li>Answers to prayers do not depend on how hard we believe. </li>
</ul>
<p>Christ as our High Priest <em><a href="http://www.gnpcb.org/esv/search/?q=+Hebrews+7" onMouseOver="addvs('24', '', verse24); stm(Text[24],Style[0])" onMouseOut="htm()">Hebrews 7</a></em><br />
Intercession by Christ on our behalf.</p>
